231 Boiler MACT Workshop Registration Open - Please join us on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 for a comprehensive Workshop covering the current area source Industrial Boiler MACT regulation and the pending major source Industrial Boiler MACT regulation.  The workshop will provide a guide to navigating the new Rule changes, including emission requirements, energy assessments, boiler tuning and reporting elements within the final and proposed rules.

Mr. Travis Vander Kolk of Dean Boiler, Inc. will be joining S. Lee Johnson, Esq., Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn, and Ms. Lillian Woolley, DTE, to provide a comprehensive overview of the area source standard and major source Boiler MACT standard. Mr. Vander Kolk will be discussing practical applications of what you can do to comply with the major source standard, including retrofit, metering, trending and documenting options.

Mr. Johnson will discuss the status of the regulations and pending litigation, as well as current legislative efforts to postpone or rescind the rules. Ms. Woolley of will discuss current area source requirements and compliance options under the final major source regulations.

219 NAAQS Workshop Registration Open - Please join us on April 21st for a comprehensive workshop featuring Mr. Jim Haywood from the MDEQ and Mr. Michael Lebeis from DTE Energy.  These gentlemen will provide insight on managing permits, modeling and new construction issues for sources that must meet the new short term NAAQS standards.  Modeling discussions will focus on practical 1-hour NO2/SO2 modeling, including EPA’s recent March 1st memo.  Mr. Haywood will be able to offer insight into the Agency’s handling of modeling received with permit applications and how he works with applicants to issue timely permits.  The implementation and use of the soon to be issued AERSCREEN model will also be covered.

217 Part 201 Workshop Registration Open - Please join us on March 31st for a comprehensive Workshop covering the newly approved amendments to Part 201. 

Perspective will be provided from the regulatory, industry, legal and consultant sectors as we are joined by Lynelle Marolf (DEQ), Brian Kandler (Detroit Chamber), Allen Reilly (Horizon Environmental), and Tom Wilzak (Pepper Law) to discuss changes to Part 201 and conduct a roundtable Q&A session at the conclusion of the presentations.  Items to be discussed include changes to No Further Action (NFA), Clean-Up Criteria, Baseline Environmental Assessment (BEA), Response Activity Review Panel, and Due Care.

212 TSCA Workshop Registration Open - The February 10th workshop entitled, “TSCA Reforms and NEW Ontario Reg 455/09 – How They May Affect Your Business” will provide a comprehensive morning covering changes in the U.S. Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), and its counterpart in Ontario, the new Ontario Toxics Reduction Act (TRA), 2009 (O.Reg 455/09).  The workshop will provide insight for U.S. and Canadian entities subject to the rules and reporting elements.

Specifically, Ms. AnnMarie Sanford of Pepper Hamilton will discuss current chemicals regulation in the United States, including how EPA is targeting certain chemicals and why your business may need to look for chemical substitutes.  Ms. Sanford will discuss current EPA actions and enforcement regarding TSCA Reform, as well as current concerns for managing chemical substitution across entire business and manufacturing sectors.

Ms. Sanford will team with Ms. Vimala Anishetty of Environmental Compliance Office, Inc (ECO).  ECO was the technical consultant retained by the Ministry to assist in the development of the Rule, which became effective on January 1, 2010.  TRA 2009 applies to an estimated 2,000 manufacturing and mineral processing facilities, and requires regulated facilities to report by June 1, 2011 for calendar year 2010.  Additionally, regulated facilities must also develop Toxic Substance Reduction Plans by December 31, 2011.  Ms. Anishetty will discuss how facilities can prepare for both of these upcoming deadlines.

    • Mr. Jim Ostrowski, MDEQ-AQD and Ms. Kim Essenmacher, General Motors, will team up to review and discuss the New ROP Renewal Application Process.  Mr. Ostrowski will review the new application process, as well as discuss “lessons learned” from the process thus far.   Ms. Essenmacher will share her insight based on GM’s recent experience with the new renewal process

237 TSCA Workshop Registration Open - The January 19, 2012 workshop entitled, “TSCA Reforms and NEW Reporting – How It May Affect Your Business” will provide a comprehensive Workshop covering changes in the U.S. Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), and Chemical Data Reporting (CDR) rule issued in August 2011.  Reports under the CDR are due by June 30, 2012.  The workshop will provide insight for U.S. entities subject to the rules and reporting elements.
 
Specifically, Ms. AnnMarie Sanford of Pepper Hamilton will provide a legal overview of the changes to TSCA and the new regulations.  She will discuss standards for asserting confidential business information (CBI) claims and the submission of data which meets the standard of “known to or reasonably ascertainable by.”  She’ll also summarize enforcement and penalties.

Ms. Sanford will team with Ms. Kim Hand of Barr Engineering Company.  Ms. Hand has assisted clients with TSCA reporting and will provide insight on the practical aspects of data collection and report development.  She will discuss joint submission options and recent guidance on reporting of byproducts.

The Young Professionals of the East Michigan Chapter of AWMA gathered on August 24th, 2011 for a night out at the ballpark to watch the Lansing Lugnuts take on the Bowling Green Hot Rods.  This was a great networking event and gave the YPs the opportunity to get out of the office and socialize with colleagues and friends and to meet other young professionals.

Clean Air Act Permitting Program Workshop
Indianapolis - October 5 and 6, 2011

Everything you know about Clean Air Act permitting is about to change.  Revisions are coming to NAAQS, NSR, PM2.5, and Ozone regulations. New Greenhouse Gas Tailoring rules are about to kick in. Pretty soon, you’ll be needing a lot of new information.

The Air & Waste Management Association has you covered with a series of new workshops focused on what you need to know, not just about new regs, but about the local and regional impacts of the changes.  Workshops will be led by nationally renowned air quality policy experts and will include local regulatory experts.  The tentative conference agenda has been released and is available here. A&WMA East Central Section (ECS) Breakfast Event

The East Central Section of A&WMA will be holding their annual breakfast meeting/networking event during the Annual Conference in Orlando.  The breakfast will be held at the Maya Grill, located in the Coronado Springs Hotel, Disney World, at 7:00 am on Wednesday June 22.  

As a heads up, meals must be ordered off the menu, so allow yourself time to eat before the rest of your day begins.  As in the past, there will be a $10.00 (cash to ECS representative) co-pay.  Receipts can be provided if needed.  Look forward to seeing you there!!

2011 INTRODUCTION TO MAERS (MICHIGAN AIR EMISSIONS REPORTING SYSTEMS) WORKSHOP

 The Introduction to MAERS workshop is offered annually to help companies submit their MAERS reports. The 2011 workshop will feature the new web-based Michigan Air Emissions Reporting System (MAERS). Workshop participants will be taken step-by-step through the new system in an interactive, hands-on format. This workshop has been designed specifically for businesses subject to MAERS reporting. Introduction to MAERS Workshop participants will learn how to register as a user in MAERS, how to navigate through the web-based forms and utilities, and how to complete and submit reports using MAERS. MAERS reporting begins January 2011. A limited number of seats are available so register early.  Workshop attendees will receive the “MAERS Workbook” and other guidance materials.

210 Sustainability Workshop Presentations - The December 1st workshop entitled, “A Business Case for Sustainability” wa the first in a series of discussions aimed at viewing sustainability beyond greenhouse gas emissions and carbon foot printing. 

The workshop featured Mr. Mike Shesterkin, Manager, Sustainability, for Akzo Nobel Coatings.  Mr. Shesterkin teamed with Ms. Wendy Schlett, Project Manager at GZA GeoEnvironmental, to discuss the various business drivers supporting sustainability, as well as varied approaches to developing a sustainability program.
